Hangtime alternative: watch vs camera

hangtime is the most genuinely hands-free hang timer on iPhone — it watches through the camera and starts when your feet leave the floor. The catch is the phone. If you want a watch-only, no-phone setup, here's the honest decision tree, including when hangtime is the better fit.

TL;DR + DISCLOSURE

Stay with hangtime if you hang at home with a phone you can prop up, like camera-based auto-start, and want leaderboards with friends. Switch to HangSpine (ours) if you want the watch to do the timing with no phone in frame — gyroscope auto-start, on-device learning, $5.99 one-time. Try Hang Habit if you want a free, iPhone-first app with tap-to-arm Watch detection and a social layer. We make HangSpine, so this is a disclosed comparison, not a neutral lab test.

HangSpine turns your Apple Watch into a dead-hang counter — it starts when you grab the bar and stops when you let go. No buttons mid-set.

First: hangtime's camera trick is real

Most "auto" hang timers are really watch-motion detectors. hangtime takes a different route: you prop your phone up with your whole body in frame, and its pose detection starts the clock when your feet leave the floor and stops when you drop. No button, no watch, no arming tap. As of November 7, 2026, its App Store listing also promises Game Center leaderboards, friends-only boards, a "beat my time" link, streaks, and an optional one-time Pro unlock for trends, Apple Health, coaching, levels, and widgets. It's free to start, and the listing says Pro is one purchase — no subscription.

That's a genuinely different product from a watch app, and for a lot of people it's the right one. The question is whether the phone-in-frame requirement fits your training space. That's the trade-off this page is about.

The camera trade-off, honestly

Camera-based detection has one big advantage and one big constraint.

Watch-based apps flip that trade-off: no phone setup, but you're relying on wrist motion instead of a full-body view. Neither is "better" in the abstract. Pick the setup you'll actually repeat.

The three-question switch test

  1. Do you have a reliable phone spot at your bar? If yes, hangtime's camera flow is excellent and you probably shouldn't switch. If you're balancing the phone on a water bottle, the setup is already the friction.
  2. Do you train away from home, or with no phone nearby? A watch-only app wins here. HangSpine is watch-first during workouts; Hang Habit and Hang Tracker also have Watch flows.
  3. Do leaderboards motivate you or distract you? If friends and boards get you to hang, stay with hangtime. If you want a private, on-device log, a watch app is a better fit.

Two or three "switch" answers: test a watch app for a week. Zero or one: stay with hangtime and save yourself the migration.

The alternatives, honestly

HangSpine (ours)

HangSpine uses the Apple Watch gyroscope to detect mounting and dismounting, so the set starts and stops without a tap or a phone. Every 10-second hold counts as a rep, confirmed by haptics; the phone app adds streaks, charts, and a session trace viewer. The on-device learning layer adapts to your mount/dismount signature over time. Limitations: watch-only during workouts, a calibration week, no camera, no social leaderboards, and a $5.99 upfront price. If the camera setup is working for you, those are real downgrades.

Hang Habit

Hang Habit is the closest free alternative if you want an iPhone-first app with a Watch option: tap to arm, motion-based detection, AirPods head gestures, Hangouts with friends, Health integration, and no account. It's a different trade-off from hangtime — less "camera magic," more habit/social tooling — and a good landing spot if you want free and flexible.

Hang Tracker

A free manual timer with presets, streaks, Watch start/pause/finish, and an optional Pro upgrade. If your real complaint is "I don't need auto-detection, I just want a clean timer," this is simpler and cheaper than both camera and watch auto-detection.

Apple's Workout app

Free and already on your wrist, but awkward for 10–60 second hangs. Interval timers, skipped segments, and silent alerts are recurring complaints. Our Apple Watch timing guide documents the failure modes.

If you switch, keep the camera for home

You don't have to pick one app for every context. A sensible split:

Who should not switch

FAQ

Is HangSpine a drop-in replacement for hangtime?

No. hangtime uses the phone camera; HangSpine uses Apple Watch motion. They solve the same "start the timer without touching anything" problem with different hardware and different setup costs.

Does hangtime require a subscription?

Its App Store listing says Hangtime Pro is one purchase, no subscription. Check the current listing and in-app price before buying.

Can I use hangtime without a tripod?

You need the phone propped with your whole body in frame. A shelf, ledge, or leaning phone can work; a proper stand is more reliable. If no camera angle is possible, the listing offers a manual timer fallback.

Which is better for travel?

A watch app. HangSpine runs on the watch without the phone; hangtime needs the phone positioned and in frame.

Does HangSpine have leaderboards?

No. It's private and on-device. If social competition is the point, stay with hangtime or use Hang Habit's Hangouts.
